Hannah is progressing her career with Bermondsey Pub Company, as she makes the move up from assistant manager to take charge of The White Lion!
Being promoted to the role of general manager at The White Lion has given Hannah Richards the chance to learn about running a pub business with a strong team supporting her. She was assistant manager when Bermondsey Pub Company took on the pub in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, 18 months ago but, seeing her potential, she was soon asked to step up. It has enabled her to work closely with the Bermondsey team to ensure the pub maximises its potential.
Bermondsey drives the concepts in its pubs and works closely on a local level to ensure they strike the right tone in each community they serve. The pub’s compelling food and drink offer, combined with an exciting programme of events, has proved a big draw. Hannah says: “We already had a great menu in place but we have worked together to make some tweaks.” The same is true of events. Again, Hannah works with the Bermondsey team to put on attractive events that drive footfall and revenue. “Bermondsey is always keen at looking at new ways to bring in more people. We have established a great music night and we had a children’s pumpkin carving competition that was really popular,” she says. Other events - such as Pizza Monday and Burger Tuesday - are based on the menu. The pub also has live jazz and a pub quiz. Part of the benefit of being attached to Bermondsey is the quality of support provided to Hannah and her team. “There is training for myself and staff and there is always someone to help out if we need it,” Hannah says. “My regional manager is fantastic. I see him regularly and he is always at the end of the phone or online.”
She also points to Bermondsey’s online resources, which provide quick and easy solutions to queries for managers. “It is so easy just to log on and find what you are looking for,” she adds. There is also a strong network of managers within the ever-growing Bermondsey estate. They have regular meetings but also stay in touch with a WhatsApp group. Hannah explains: “It’s so good to meet up because you can talk about any issues you might be experiencing and also see what is working in other pubs to drive sales. It’s another great way of getting ideas to try in you pub.”
